2016 IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR
Christmas has come and gone, and it’s time to take an inventory of 2016. What were the most significant events of the past year? Well, here’s my take on it.
IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM The full moon of November 14, 2016, was the largest, closest, and brightest super moon of this year. The moon turned precisely full at 13:52 UTC. This was the largest super moon since 1934, and the moon won’t come this close to Earth again until November 25, 2034.
IN OUR LITTLE SLICE OF SPACE America said goodbye to John H. Glenn Jr., Mercury astronaut and the first American to orbit the earth. Colonel Glenn was a highly decorated USMC fighter pilot and was chosen to be one of seven original astronauts. He was elected to the United States Senate, and at age 77, he returned to NASA to fly on the space shuttle. He has received six Distinguished Flying Crosses, eighteen clusters to the Air Medal, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and is a member of the U.S Astronaut Hall of Fame. Well done Colonel Glenn. You had the right stuff. SEMPRE FI!
IN THE WORLD The rise of militant Islam as a non-state threat to Western Civilization. Not since the eleventh century has the Muslim world mounted such a successful attack on its Christian enemies. The Western nations have reacted with confusion and lack of purpose, hoping that by taking no action, they will be spared the scimitar. Good luck with that. How’d Munich work out?
IN THE USA The election of Donald Trump as President. Nuff said.
IN THE SOUTH The overwhelming support given to Donald Trump and the total rejection of Hilary Clinton by women, minorities, and Democrats in general. I will miss having Bill around.
IN ALABAMA After a year of watching the State shoot itself in the foot, it would be difficult to decide which of these boondoggles deserved top billing, so I’m going to choose The Crimson Tide’s National NCAA Football Championship. ROLL TIDE!
IN OPELIKA The re-election of Mayor Gary Fuller, the best small town Mayor in America, and the return of the Rocky Brook Rocket.
ON ROCKY BROOK ROAD My relocation to a home office, which I have really enjoyed, and wish I had done it sooner, and the fact that Clista has been able to tolerate me for our fifth year together. YOU GO, GIRL!!!
Soon, we’ll continue our adventure in a brand new year, and I wish each of you happiness, good health, and serenity.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Let’s just say “the world” – not bothering with these sectional locales. The most significant thing in the whole wide world if not the universe was MSU winning the Egg Bowl. This was followed in the distance by the Cubs winning the World Series and the Clintons being put out to pasture. Ah, if only 2017 can be as great.
I wish you a happy New Year

And a Happy New Year to y’all as well, Tom. Can’t wait to see what we conclude at the end of 2017!
